Before we left San Diego, I had one of my mom’s group friends and a professional photographer take some portraits of our little family by the beach. One, I wanted professional pictures while Xander was still a baby, and two, I wanted them at a quintessentially Southern California location, something that said “this is where we used to live.”

What I’ll Miss

I’ve been so focused on the minutiae of What Needs To Get Done before we move, and trying to only focus on all the wonderful things we’ll be gaining in our new life in Vermont, that I haven’t taken much time to think about the wonderful parts of California that I know I’ll miss. It’s easy to go the other way, you know? Stuck in traffic and the Ubiquitous White Pick Up cuts me off? “I sure won’t miss THAT in Vermont!”  Get a flier of recent home sales and see that our condo would sell for significantly more than our house is costing us. “Well, it’ll be nice to not have to deal with THAT.”

But while these things are true, yes, California has been a great place to be. So in no particular order, here are some of the things I will miss:

• 266 days of sunshine
• Fish tacos
• Limitless fresh produce
• Avocados from “down the way”
• My favorite wines for less than $5 a bottle
• The beach
• Air that smells like jasmine
• Purple jacaranda petals
• Dr. Seuss plants
• My favorite sushi place (where you can watch jumping fish in the lagoon)
• Trader Joe’s
• And, of course, all of our friends

Balboa

For long, boring, and complicated reasons, today pretty much blows.

So, instead of focusing on that, let’s look at some more  pictures from the weekend. JS and I went to Balboa Park and wandered around on Sunday. We went to the Rose Gardens, which are still in pretty good bloom (if only slightly wilted from the heat), and got a hand dipped ice-cream bar which was fantastic.
